Raising Beef Cattle

Robert Kincaid
Fluvanna Families Learning Together

aising beef cattle as a hobby and raising beef cattle as an occupation can be rewarding physically and financially. There are many different cattle breeds to choose from. Some of these would be Angus, Hereford, Charolais, Black Baldie and Galloway.

Cattle are vegetarians. Their natural food source is different types of forages. Some forage would be Orchard grass, Alfalfa, Fescue and corn silage. Although many cattle in the Southeast eat Fescue grass daily for nutrition and survival, it has a fungus in it. This fungus can cause cattle to have sore feet, body temperature to rise and hair to fall out of their tail. Cattle can also be fed different types of grain, although feeding equal amounts of grain and forage are not healthy. Cattle have microbes in their stomach that digest their food. It takes a different microbe to digest grain versus forage. Therefore you should feed a lot of one and a little of the other.

Breeding with your herd will be a rewarding experience in terms of having calm animals that don't spook at the sight of humans. Spending a little time with them when feeding and talking calmly while moving with slow easy movements will tame them considerably. Having tame and semi tame animals greatly helps in the chore of giving medication and vaccines.

Breeding of cattle usually takes place in the spring of the year or fall of the year, depending on which season the farmer chooses. Cows carry their fetus for nine months as do human females. Experienced farmers can see indications of birth usually one week in advance. If possible, all cows and especially first time heifers should be supervised to see if they need help. Calves are born weighing approximately 75 pounds. They drink milk from their mother until the mother or the farmer weans them. Farmers usually wean at seven months. Cows take a little longer to wean their calves.

I have found great satisfaction in raising cattle for my own personal beef and beef sales. Raising cattle as a hobby or occupation can be a learning experience about cattle and their nature as well as supplying beef sales to consumers.

My Work

Florine Early
Charlottesville Adult Ed GED

work in the housekeeping department at UVA. I have been there for thirty-two years and it's not so bad. Where I work I deal with so many things in a day at work and come in contact with so many people from all over the world because there are classes in the building for judges, court reporters and lawyers, where I work.

My Job is to see that the work is done and we have all the supplies we need to do our job, like linens for the rooms and cleaning supplies for offices and bathrooms. I make sure that the floors are cleaned, the carpets vacuumed, walls and windows washed, and furniture dusted. In the rooms like a hotel, we change beds twice a week. We are like a hotel but students stay there for ten weeks or longer. Some have their families with them.

To get back to my duties: I also order the supplies we use and I try to handle any problems that may come up in the building when it concerns housekeping. The building has two shifts in it. I work with both shifts, the morning and the evening shift, so my days seem very long. But I like my job because I have a supervisor that works with me and also I train new employees that come to work in the building for housekeeping. I do a lot of walking since this building has five floors on one side and three on the other side. There are fifteen employees that work with me in this building.

Do Good in Your Life

he first summer of my work at UVA one day I started working around 3:15 in the large library to empty trash and wipe tables. I heard someone say stop it. I turned my face. It was my supervisor. "Come on, come on," she said, "you must clean another building first before this one." I said, "Why? There's no one else to work?" She looked at me and said "Shut up you do not know anything." Then I quietly followed her. When we tried to sit in her truck, she said, "Look at me. What I'm saying? You have to run fast, clean 10 rest rooms, all classrooms and offices in four hours." This anger of hers made me feel very sad. Why insult me everyday? Anyway, I start working at that huge building.

After 3 hours working hard I stopped. Past my ugly housekeeping cart in front of a restroom, I saw a professor and students in a classroom across the hall. They got my attention for some moments. My mind flew into the past. I remembered a time when I was a teacher in my country. I remembered the date in a class with my students. They were so excited to go to college the next year but they didn't go. I remembered the time some of my students died and some were injured by rockets of terrorists. I remember the bloody war between seven cruel groups in Kabul including Taliban when they killed a million people and destroyed our country. I remember the date when I escaped the country and I left behind me everything. I lost my country. I lost my respect. I lost my education. I lost my family members. And I lost my job. It's ok. These are all gifts of terrorists and war.

Then, suddenly, a chemical bottle fell off my cart to the floor in front of me, I saw that cart with water bucket and mop between me and that classroom. I felt a big change in my life. I thought that building is turning on my head. Then I told myself that humans should accept that life changes by time. But this change is different. Then in the last minutes of work, when I walked in the hallway, I told myself be patient. Do always anything is good for the human in this world. Your goal is to help people. Doesn't matter if your profession is changed. You should be proud to work for these students. This young generation needs teachers, and they also need a clean class. This is also a kind of help which I can give them.

First Day of Work

Paulo Henrique Lima
Charlottesville Adult Ed ESL

'd like to talk about my first day of work and also about learning English. This I mention because my first day at work was very frustrating. I couldn't express myself, nor understand people, so I immediately felt the need to study this country's language. At the same time that I was happy about starting my first US job, it was a horrible feeling not to be able to say who I was, where I was from, why I was there, or what my future plans were. So, I came to the Adult Learning Center, in Charlottesville, where I took my first steps in English language learning. By the way, I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all of you who have dedicated your time, money, and more, just so we can have a chance of reaching our dream of a better life. (God bless you.)

After two years of classes, I can now understand 30% of the language, which is in and of itself a victory: to be confident in speaking and understanding more about my job (I started out earning $8.45/hr, but have now been promoted and earn $16.45/hr). I can also express my feelings about contributing to this nation, making it stronger and sovereign through hard work.

I am still studying English, for I see it as the first step toward reaching the dream of a better life for me and for my family.

I like the dreams of the future better
than the history of the past.

Hungry?

Washington Luiz Torres
Charlottesville Adult Ed ESL

like my job, because day by day I can learn many different things. I have learned how to make cakes, breads, and brownies.

I work five days a week. I have Wednesday off and we are closed on Sunday. I don't like to get up early, but I have to get up at 5:00 am. I work until 2:00 pm.

In the morning when I get to work, I have to make breads. We have two kinds of breads. Everyday I make cranberry-pecan and focaccio, and everyday, we have other kinds of breads. I make the breakfast pastries, almond croissant, muffin and scones. Oh and we have some cookies, too!

Last Thanksgiving I made 300 pies. I made apple pies, sweet-potato pies, and pecan pies. The pecan is my favorite pie. In my life I never imagined that I could make so many pies. That night I was so tired that I thought I never wanted to see another pie, but I hope to keep baking through next Thanksgiving.

I try to learn everything I can about baking because I think one day I will open my own baking business. I have a lot of experience already and a lot of burn scars, too. I think I'm going to stop telling you about my job, because I don't want to make you hungry. But if you got hungry, please come visit me at From Scratch Baking Company.

My Friend -- Fear

Guy Domingo
Charlottesville Adult Ed ESL

worked in France, in the private sector of Special Education, as a youth worker, the children were professionally defined as "intellectually deficient."

I spent a good part of my time observing them. And they liked playing hide-and-seek with adults. I would take them to homeroom. I acted as a shepherd with his sheep.

One day, a child more audacious than the others went on an adventure in the woods next to our building. He climbed a large tree and hung from a branch about five meters high. When he couldn't get down, he started to scream!

I approached the tree but he was too high for me to reach. And I have vertigo! He screamed louder and he shrieked, "I am afraid! I'm going to fall!" I did not hesitate. I climbed the tree along with my fear. I moved closer to him and he looked at me and said in a soft voice, "I'm afraid!"

I replied that I was very afraid, too, then I seized one of his slippery hands. I helped him climb up onto the branch as other curious students and teachers watched. And we climbed down the tree safely. I never knew who saved whom!

In seeking the truth on the path of life, a person meets an immense door that blocks the route. He knocks on the door, asking, "Yes, there is FEAR!" He opens the door and behind it -- there is no one! And he continues on his life's journey.

When I see this child, we warmly greet each other, and in the silence I hear fear smile.

No Goal, No Life

Masako Wada

ever say that. You are NOT JUST housewives. YOU WORK at your house!" The words changed my life. That happened in my ESL class.

I had worked at a cosmetic company in Japan until I came to Charlottesville. I had a goal to launch a new brand and boost its sales in the project team. I had to work more than 15 hours a day. To achieve the goal was very, very hard but it also fascinated me. I certain have a sense of achievement. I ran for my life.

Meanwhile my husband and I had no time to communicate each other. That was our big problem. Time went without any solution.

The turning point came. My husband's company decided that my husband should study abroad. Finally I chose the way to become a housewife and spend my life with him. We had been at the limit of our communication-less-ness.

When I came to Charlottesville, I was satisfied with the fact that I had a lot of time to communicate with my husband. A new life gave me a happiness which I couldn't have when I worked.

However the happiness didn't continue for a long time. As time passed my mind drooped gradually. My heart was full of much boredom instead of satisfaction. I had nothing to do except wait for my husband's return with doing just house chores. There is no goal, no sense of achievement, no excitement. My heart was empty. I missed my busy days in my company. I felt regret for quitting my job even though I had sworn to myself that I would never feel regret about my decision.

At that time, my ESL class began. To begin with, my teacher asked us, "What do you do in Charlottesville?" Most students answered, "I'm just a housewife." And I was not an exception.

My teacher said loudly, "Never say that. You are NOT JUST housewives. YOU WORK at your house!"

At first, I didn't belive the words. "No, I AM just a housewife. I don't have any goal about my work. Can I call it Work???" I thought.

However, what my teacher said still rang in my ears after that until I came back home and did house chores. "If the house chores I do are Work, I should determine a goal which I can satisfy. But what kind of goal...?"

At last I tried to find a goal in my "work," that is to say, household chores. It was so difficult for me to find a goal. All the things that I do were very small things and could not be expressed with figure like sales. I looked for it for a few days.

Then I decided the goal. The goal was that "I will cook every meal with a different menu for a month -- 30 days."

In beginning, I tried to make meals while reading my cookbooks that I brought from Japan. Then I bought an American cookbook and tried. Sometimes I investigated on the Internet and challenged myself. When I tried to follow my Japanese recipes, I was confused because America doesn't have some Japanese ingredients. While when I followed the American recipes, it took a long time to read English. Never to overlap was sometimes hard, especially when I was tired.

However after one month passed, I realized that cooking became not a duty chore but my "work" for me. I enjoyed my work very much and could feel a sense of achievement certainly.

Not until I became a housewife and became free did I realize this very important thing about myself. It is essential for me to determine a goal about my work and I can't enjoy my life without a sense of achievement. This may be not only for me but also for all humans. "No goals, no life," I learned by Work.

Now I can say with confidence, "I Work at my house."

Four hours later Mohamed has to go out for customer's delivery. I stayed at the bakery with Joe. Joe was a Mexican guy and I didn't know about him. He was an abnormal person. I didn't know Mohamed tried to explain to me how to cook the bread. I didn't have experience about it and I let a bread batch burn. That happened because I didn't know English. Now I feel better. am a nanny, and I love my job. I found the job in the newspaper. I was a little scared, but I called the family and they gave me an interview. So I had the interview, and they gave me the job. They told me in the interview there were 50 people before me, that made me feel great. I think I do everything well in my job because I have been there five months and they love me.

My job is important because I learn how to work with a family, speak a different language, understand the children, and handle a big responsibility.

I love it when I see that they love my work. They told me I am like one of the family. They respect me a lot. The girls love me, and I love them. And I love that they understand my effort to speak English. The mother, Michele, lets me have the time to go to school. The 7-year old girl helps me with pronunciation and grammar.

Before I had this job, I was afraid to read the newspaper or speak on the phone. And now I realize that the time before was not as valuable as the time is now.

How James and I Tricked Anna

Eliza V. Kingston

t happened like this. James was walking to check the grounds at UVA. So he was out to get me first. He came up to me telling me that he had seen some money in the trash can at the end of building fifty.

He told me there was a man standing behind building fifty one. I so I said to myself that something is wrong with this picture. Because if there was money in the trash can, why didn't he get it first. So he couldn't get me. So we decided to play the same trick on Anne.

So I told her that I had got a call saying that we didn't empty the trash can this mroning. So we had to go right away and get it done.

So we started walking down to where the trash can was. She lifted the top of the trash can up. That's when a squirrel jumped out at her! It scared the hell out of her! That was the first time that she was speechless. James and I killed ourselves laughing. I was all over the grounds laughing. The UVA students were looking trying to figure out what was wrong with me.

Anna was so mad with us that day. She said that she would get us back. She said the reason why she was scared is because the squirrel looked like a rat. That's why she was speechless! We still laugh about that day now.

My Great Job at UVA Facilities

VA Facilities is a really good place to work. When I worked on the outside for contractors, they really didn't give a darn about you. They just wanted to rush to get the job done. They did that because the more you do, the more money they can make.

This job at the University of Virginia is a lot different. They only rush you once in a while, but most of the time it's laid back and you work at your own pace. Also, job safety comes before the job. Even though we don't rush and we focus on safety, we still get the job done.

Another good thing about this job is that your education comes first. They want you to get education, like me trying to get my GED on their time. I think that is really great! We have great benefits at UVA Facilities. I appreciate my job and joke about it, but I want my GED because when I get it I'll feel really great.

My Work Is My Life

Maria Beatriz Cunha Alli

hen I was in the last year of Business Administration School, I decided to find an intern job in the Human Resources area. This time, at school, I started to study the importance of people and their relationship at work and based on this my decision was made in August 2003, when I got my job at Accenture, my actual company.

Accenture is an American consulting company and considering that the main product is knowledge, people are the most important raw material in this company. So the Human Resources Area has to be very good in handling people.>

In 2003 I started working in the Training and Development Area. This area was responsible for finding out and organizing training for employees who need specific knowledge to attend to a client or a project. I had worked in this area for 6 months, when, in March 2004, I was transferred to delivery human resource area.

I worked in this new area as a human resources consultant attending to more than 300 employees. Those 300 employees were specialized in Energy Client in Brazil and the biggest client used to be Petrobras (Oil Company in Brazil.)

At that time I used to help our managers staffing their teams to carry out a project for a client, supporting them to choose the best person to attend a specific demand. I used to support the company partners on the proposed employee hired. I used to help employees decide on a career counselor and decide which training is better for them. But the things that I most liked to do was teaching them about the company, because at that time I met them face-to-face and could see in their eyes their concerns and afflictions and I could help them much more than I used to when we were talking on the phone.

As soon as I graduated from school in July 2004 I was hired as a regular employee. After my graduation, I stayed in this area for more than 2 years, and I decided to be transferred to another area to increase my Human Resources knowlege.

In may 2006 I was transferred to the Compensation Area. This area was responsible for deciding which compensation policy is going to be better to our employees. This was a very good experience for me because I started to work closely with the senior executives of the company, the most experienced employees in the company This was a very stressful period because to create a good policy for the employees it is essential that the costs don't increase more. I worked so hard that time, but I liked it.

I love what I do and every day that I go to my job I try to do my best. I love being with people and working in a team. So it was very hard for me to decide to come to the USA to just study for 4 months because I had to give up my job for a while but my team really stimulated me and they allowed me to stay 4 months studying. This is why I am having English classes and Human Resources classes in UVA, to increase my knowlege and keep working hard to improve the life of the employees who I work with.

I Like Talking About My Job

work with Pinnell Custom Leather. I have worked there for 8 years. The main thing I do is make whole chaps and half chaps. Chaps are used by cowboys riding horses to protect themselves from rubbing against the horse. Half chaps are similar to boots. When my boss takes the orders for the chaps he gets all the details about what a customer wants. Then, I take the form to make sure I understand everything. After that I design the chaps by making a pattern and cutting it out. When the pattern is cut out, I put all the pieces together and then stitch them. Chaps and half chaps are different designs. Some are fancy, and some are simple. Although I had done some stitching before, my boss taught me the skill of stitching leather. It can be very thick and difficult to stitch sometimes.

When finished, I box the chaps and ship it out to customers. I can make some simple chaps in a day. Fancy chaps might be two -- three days because everything is hand made. Each chaps I put the customers name on the chaps to make sure that it belongs to the person I made it for.

We make chaps for famous people. Steven Spielberg is one of our good customers. We also make pocket books, belts, dog collars with rhinestones, any kind the customer wants.

I like my job because designs are different all the time. The stitching that is fancy can be hard but exciting to me. If the customer is happy they send a letter to thank us or call to tell us how they like it. Twenty-five years ago I came to the United States. I from Laos. I lived in North, then I move to Alexandria. I move to Charlottesville ten years ago. First I was looking for a job and saw the ad in the newspaper. I applied for the job. My boss interviewed me, and he say he will think about it. Two weeks later he called me to come in for some tests. Then he tells me I got the job. That's how I got the job and still work for him until now.
